Why Valencia Is Europe's Best-Kept Secret

Kevin Cohen10 December 20255 min read

Barcelona gets the headlines. Madrid gets the politics. And Valencia quietly gets on with being one of the best cities in Europe to visit — and live.

300 Days of Sunshine

Valencia averages more than 300 sunny days per year. That's more than Barcelona, Rome, or Lisbon. The Mediterranean climate means mild winters (10-18°C) and warm summers with sea breezes. There is almost never a bad time to visit.

The Food Capital of Spain

Valencia is where paella was invented. The Mercado Central is one of Europe's finest covered markets. And the city's restaurant scene ranges from Michelin-starred tapas bars to family-run beachside rice restaurants that haven't changed their recipes in generations.

Horchata — a cold tiger nut drink — is Valencia's gift to hot afternoons. Agua de Valencia (cava, orange juice, vodka, gin) is its gift to the night.

Architecture That Spans 2,000 Years

Valencia has Roman ruins, a Gothic silk exchange (UNESCO), Moorish walls, Art Nouveau train stations, and Santiago Calatrava's futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. No other city in Spain offers this range in such a compact area.

The Turia: A River Turned Park

When the Turia river flooded in 1957, the city diverted it and turned the old riverbed into a 9-kilometre park running through the city centre. Today it's Valencia's green spine — perfect for running, cycling, or just walking under orange trees.

No Crowds

Valencia receives a fraction of the tourists that flood Barcelona or Seville. That means shorter queues, lower prices, and actual locals in the restaurants. The authenticity is what keeps visitors coming back.

Getting Here

Valencia Airport (VLC) has direct flights from most European cities. The city is also connected by high-speed AVE train to Madrid (1h40) and Barcelona (3h). Once here, you barely need transport — the old town is entirely walkable.

NeoBeds is located in Valencia's old town, near Torres de Serranos. Three designer apartments, direct booking, and a host who knows every corner of this city.
